Monthly giving empowers donors to make long-term impact—one small step at a time.

I was fortunate to be part of an organization that has established its legitimacy by adopting monthly giving. Yes, it took almost 10 years to establish but today that organization is generating over INR 90 lakhs revenue from its donor base every month and it is free of any pressure as these 90 lakhs are unrestricted funds. If you look around India and even outside India all the Charites who have adopted monthly giving in their donor acquisition strategy, are currently are not dependent on funds from Funders or Granters.

This is what Erica Waasdorp wrote in her blog about monthly giving for small and mid-sized Charities- https://bit.ly/3wjhFpJ

Reason -1 Why Monthly Giving Is Getting More Popular In The Past Decade-

The magic of monthly giving Is that it gives you a predictable stream of income month after month, and who supports your organization over time. They tend to give 2x more over their lifetimes than those who repeatedly give one-time gifts.

If you want to give your recurring donation program a kickstart, you’ll want to design a campaign to entice people to become monthly donors.

The best place to start is by deciding which of your existing donors would be a good fit for a monthly program. Here are some good ideas:

  • Donors who give annually
  • Donors who recently made a smaller one-time gift.
  • Donors you acquired during year-end (to help support throughout the year).
  • Donors who have strong ties to a particular program (think program alumni, former staff, etc) that are poised for ongoing support.
  • Donors 35 and under.

Now you’ve got your audience and you’re ready to create the campaign. Simply adding the option to your donation form doesn’t communicate to your donors. Instead, try some of these strategies to create a monthly giving campaign that looks enticing to your donors.

  • Build an email campaign explaining the benefits of monthly giving
  • Create a donation page focused on monthly giving
  • Share quotes from current monthly donors
  • Create a special name or program for monthly donors
  • Give solid impact statements on why monthly giving is important
  • Ask across all channels
  • Share a due date to communicate a sense of urgency

With these tips, you’ll have a monthly giving campaign that gets people excited.

Recurring gift programs provide donors flexible payment options that promote sustainable, long-term giving.

Reason-2 Why Monthly Giving Is Getting More Popular In The Past Decade-

Consider the benefits of recurring giving:

  • Easy implementation: Add a recurring gift option on donor response materials or an online giving platform.
  • Higher retention rates: Donors are more likely to remain active when provided with hassle-free payment methods.
  • Predictable: Consistent, automated giving allows organizations to budget with confidence.
  • Convenient: Donors appreciate the option to commit and forget.
  • Updatable: Donors can revise their giving schedule at any time.
  • Sustainable Funding During Unpredictable Times

Reason- 3 Why Monthly Giving Is Getting More Popular In The Past Decade-

Recurring donations have been proven time and time again to increase giving, engagement, and donor retention. Although a donor may set up a monthly recurring donation at a lower amount than a one-time donation, the cumulative effect of those smaller monthly donations will quickly surpass the amount a donor would’ve given with a one-time gift.
