My Training Roadmap for New YPs: A Journey Into Fundraising with Purpose

When I first sat down to design this roadmap, my goal was simple: I wanted to help new Young Professionals (YPs) feel inspired, confident, and capable of owning their journey in fundraising. What unfolded over several sessions was not just a training structure — it was a shared journey of growth, self-discovery, and transformation.

Here’s a glimpse into the roadmap I delivered — and the meaningful steps each session held.

Session 1: Mind Jog (2 hrs 10 mins)- I kicked off the training with something I believe is vital: emotional connection. Fundraising is not just about techniques; it’s about people — and that starts with connecting to your own “why.”

We explored:

  • Who Am I & Who Are You? (30 mins): A chance for everyone to reflect on identity and shared purpose.
  • The Story of an Accidental Fundraiser (40 mins): I shared a story close to my heart, showing how we often stumble into our calling.
  • What Fundraising Gives & Takes (30 mins): An honest conversation about the rewards and challenges.
  • Belongingness & Identity (30 mins): Why being rooted in your values makes all the difference.

We wrapped up with a 30-minute feedback session, and I was moved by the reflections and honesty that surfaced even this early in the journey.

Session 2: Personal Connect (4 hrs 30 mins)- This session was deeply immersive. I guided YPs through an introspective journey — connecting aspirations with the reality of working in fundraising.

Some powerful conversations included:

  • Future Aspirations in Retail Fundraising (45 mins): Money, meaning, and making a difference — it’s possible to have all three.
  • Growth from Executive to Director (90 mins): I laid out a clear growth pathway, something many YPs hadn’t visualized before.
  • Location-Based Discussions (90 mins): How strategy shifts based on where you’re standing.
  • Approaching Strangers at Locations (2 hrs): This was all about breaking fear and building confidence.
  • Pitching – Online & Tele (2 hrs): Crafting conversations that move from problem to solution.

This session really unlocked belief. You could see it in the eyes of the trainees.

Session 3: Information Exchange & Application (21 hrs)- This is where we got technical and tactical. Over a series of intensive hours, I took the team through the mechanics of fundraising.

We covered:

  • Types of Fundraising (Retail, Online, CSR, Grants, Events) – 3 hrs
  • History of Fundraising in India’s Freedom Movement – 30 mins
  • Making the Ask – Donation Pitching – 2 hrs
  • Gift Structures – Regular vs Single – 1 hr
  • Building Donor Personas – 45 mins
  • Understanding the Banking Process – 1.5 hrs
  • Daily Readiness Checklist – 30 mins

Then came the hands-on practice:

  • Mock Pitch Sessions – 2 hrs
  • War Room Simulation – 1 hr
  • Live Observation of Experts – 1 hr
  • Role Plays: Donnée vs Donor – 1 hr

The energy in the room was real — this is where theory began to meet action.

Session 4: Information Application (5 hrs)- I designed this as a bridge session. It was time for trainees to take the tools they’d been given and start testing them. We ran simulations and structured challenges, preparing them for what would come next — the real world.

Session 5: Real-World Connect (72 hrs)- This was the most powerful part of the journey.

72 hours of real-time fundraising. The highs, the lows, the rejections, the breakthroughs. I observed each YP in action — not to grade them, but to understand them.

This phase wasn’t about perfection. It was about truth — how they adapted, how they grew, how they reflected.

And it was incredible to witness.

My Reflections- Delivering this roadmap was more than training — it was mentorship in motion. I saw young people shift from hesitant beginners to bold changemakers. They didn’t just learn fundraising. They found voice, purpose, and grit.

If you’re a new YP stepping into this space, know this: you’re not just raising funds — you’re raising yourself. And I’m here for the journey.
